The History of Dashain Festival
Dashain Bijayana Daśama is a famous festival originating from Nepal. In certain parts of India, however, it is known as Bijaya DaŚa, and in Nepal, it is known as Dashara.
Dashain Festival is celebrated to honor the patron deity of the festival, and the processions are conducted for the deities. The festival starts with the procession of the holy lord Bishnoi to the temple. There he performs austerities in front of the temple, chanting mantras that are said to be blessings on the temple. At the end of the procession, the holy lord then leaves the temple with his priest, carrying his bowl and offering sweets.
Jangbai, or Bhai Bishnoi, is also a popular deity. Jangbai performs austerities and prayers along with the priest at the temple and then leaves with his devotees to the holy land of Nepal, which is Bindu. In India, however, the holy lord is not represented by a god in this form. Instead, he is represented by Bhai Mahabali, who is a devotee of Shiva. His sister, Jangbai, is another equally popular deity who serves to protect the holy lord.
In many villages in the foothills of the Himalayas, the two sisters are dressed in their traditional clothing, but they wear their sacred garlands, in addition to jewelry. They dance and worship in front of the village temple. When the temple gate is closed, the two sisters dance and recite mantras. They then enter the holy land, where they perform other rituals before the king. A huge procession is organized, and after that, the holy lady, Jangbai is seated on a lotus flower and is worshiped. At her feet are offerings of flowers, as well as sweets to the gods. In addition, food is spread on the lotus flower, which is then eaten by the monks in the vicinity.
At one point, the holy woman was believed to have been a child who was killed by her father. The story goes on to say that as a punishment, her brother burned her on a pyre. Her ashes are said to scatter all over the kingdom and it is believed that they cover the entire world. This legend is often referred to during Dashain Festival.
In addition, the festival is observed with many ceremonies and rituals, as well as a celebration of good health and prosperity. In the morning, the festival marks the start of the day of Bindu and after this, a small procession takes place, with the king, Bindu, and the temple priest, Bhai Mahabali performs several rituals that symbolize their protection and prosperity.
