The story goes that Lord Shiva was looking at the world and he saw a woman sitting on the top of the mountain who was laughing at a lot of people. He was very much angered and started to rage. In his fury he decided that there should be a goddess for him to worship.
Once it had been decided that there would be a God for him to worship, he went to the hill town of Vrindavan where he saw a female god called Parvati. She was a very beautiful and attractive goddess who could control her moods. She was very jealous of her husband as he was not able to live up to the divine status of her father. Shiva did not want her to suffer so much as he decided that she should become beautiful so that he could fulfill her wish.
So, when Shiva visited Parvati he offered his wife a bull named Bhagya. When Bhagya was born it was so beautiful that Shiva was moved to worship it. Shiva had no choice but to allow Parvati to marry him. After he became the king of the gods, he made Parvati immortal.
Now on the occasion of the festival, she is also known as the Queen of the Gods as she is believed to have appeared on Earth on the very day when the human race began to multiply. On this day, people were celebrating their ability to multiply and God gave them a gift of intelligence which gave them the power to do so. This gift from God was also known as Moksha or Kundalini.
